For parents of 5th and L6th students:

The National Citizen Service, The Challenge, have been to College to explore expressions of interest from students in this government backed scheme, which provides incredible opportunities for personal growth, service, making friends, and learning skills. It costs very little indeed (a maximum of £50) and the high point is a week of adventurous activities in the summer. Anyone participating would need to be in the UK for at least three weeks of the summer to participate in the full programme.

The Challenge is widely known and highly regarded by potential universities and employers. As it is a national scheme, it mixes students with people from all kinds of different backgrounds, but it is of course possible to choose a venue close to home (e.g. London). It can also be used to satisfy the project element of CAS requirements of the IB Diploma. Previous Wellingtonians who have participated have rated this scheme highly.
