Team of the Week
Berkshire District Athletics Squad.
On Thursday 24th May, Wellington entered year 9 and 10 teams for the Berkshire District Athletics Championships at Reading AC. This is now the 2nd year Wellington has supported District Athletics in Berkshire. Due to numbers doing athletics and the constraints of the one athlete, one event District policy, Wellington struggles with the team events, but individually what a great day, 13 District Champions and 8 Silvers, with 18 Wellington Athletes being invited to the Berkshire County Championships on June 9th.
The Wellington Teams came 2nd in the year 9 Boys and Girls, 2nd in the Year 10 boys and 4th in the year 10 Girls. This is out of 12 schools.
Congratulations to all the District Champions and best of luck to all the athletes competing in the Counties.
Huge congratulations to Tara Sallaba who won the bronze medal at the England Age Group Triathlon Championships in the U20 category, which also means she will join the GB age group team for the Europeans next year in Russia.
Congratulations to Eliot Desforges who has qualified for the British National Championship and the English Championship this Summer. These invitation events are only open to the fastest swimmers in each group, with the top 24 going to the British Championship. Both Eliot’s events, 50m Butterfly and 50m Freestyle, had over 1,000 people competing in his age group during the qualifying period. The events will be held at the end of July in Sheffield.
OW Miles O’Donnell – GB Showjumping Success
Congratulations to Miles who represented GB last week in Austria and came 3rd in the major Grand Prix. This included top Young Riders from 15 countries. He was given his GB Young Riders jacket which he now wears with pride.
Week 6 saw a quieter week with the start of exams and Speech Day preparations. However, the Junior Colts had a county cup T20 game which they won comprehensively and now face Herschel School on Tuesday 5th June. Midweek also saw JKO contested which the Hill ran out winners, with the Picton 2nd, Benson 3rd and Talbot 4th. As the Speech Day festivities began the 1st XI ran out successful in the Speech Day Eve T20 game vs the OWCC as the College chased down 132, however, the Speech Day game saw less success as the OWCC cruised to an 8 wicket victory, chasing 168 for just 2 wickets.
Inter House Athletics Finals – Speech Day
Rockies hosted the finals of Inter-House Athletics on Speech Day. With relay double points available the overall winners Gold medal was very much up for grabs. With a huge crowd watching, the Houses did not disappoint in their participation and the performances. What great races. After all the events and finals, the overall winners were the Hill for the boys and the Anglesey for the Girls. Thank you to all the houses, as the number of pupils participating, and the atmosphere was incredible, not just on Speech Day, but on the Inter-House Athletics day at the start of term.
On the eve of Speech Day, the boys 1st team played the OW’s and won 3 sets to 1. Well played to Freddie Bristowe, Charlie Vleck, Ethan Distelbrink & Alex Stannard. On Speech day itself, the junior house finals were played. The Picton beat the Beresford, and the Anglesey beat the Combermere in front of a large supportive crowd. Well played all involved.
