Sports Video Round-Up 2017/18

Tennis

Mixed 1st Tennis team

On Saturday 23 June, Wellington hosted its 2nd Invitational Mixed Doubles Tournament at Cantley Park. The teams invited included Epsom, Cranleigh, Charterhouse and Sevenoaks. Wellington’s team included players from 4th, 5th and L6th forms.

Wellington beat Epsom, Cranleigh and Charterhouse 2-1 and then excelled themselves in the final round beating the previously unbeaten Sevenoaks 3-0. Congratulations to Freddie and Daisy Bristowe, Ethan Distelbrink, Issie Thorneycroft, Alex Stannard and captain Kat Frankopan on retaining the trophy for Wellington. It was a fiercely competitive event in warm sunshine with 5 of the 12 sets going to a tie break. Congratulations to all players.

 Channel Swim Team

After clocking up 80 kilometres of training each since April, in lakes and in the sea in temperatures as cold as 10C, the 2018 relay team of Matty Groom, Piper Lloyd, Caitlin Loo, Jess Mundy, Raph Robeson, Elodie Sinclair and Mr Murphy began their relay swim from England to France just after 0820 on Monday morning.  Swimming without wetsuits in sea temperature of 15C, each swimmer took turns to swim one hour and immediately made fast progress out from the white cliffs of Dover into the busy shipping lanes.  Each swimmers’ hour presented new challenges from the notorious jellyfish strewn mid-Channel to maintaining a consistently favourable course through the tides to avoid getting in the wrong position with the tides dragging the team away from France.  Although Dover to Calais is 22 miles as the crow flies, the team swam 35 miles and landed at 1944 on rocks below the cliffs at Cap Gris Nez, south of Calais.  The team’s courage, spirit and support to each other was exemplary – this was a special team that worked for each other every step of the way – each swimmer pushed themselves to their limits and gave it everything.

The final crossing time off 11 hours 23 minutes breaks the College record by 55 minutes and is the 7th fastest Channel relay swim out of 200 mostly adult relay crossings certified by the Channel Swimming Federation in the last 3 years.  It is also the first time the College has achieved back to back fully certified crossings.

Team of the Term

Yearling B’s Cricket

The mighty Wellington Wombats have shown fierce determination, grit and resilience as they have won some scintillating games of cricket against oppositions with perhaps better individuals but they have not been bettered as a team.
